About MLK Jr. African-American Heritage Rodeo

The Annual MLK, Jr. African American Heritage Rodeo of Champions celebrates the skills of top-tier African American cowboys and cowgirls who have qualified for well-renowned rodeos such as the NFR, IFR, PBR and BPFR. The weekend includes a rodeo, concert and more.

Rodeo is a competitive sport that originated from the cattle herding practices of Spain and Mexico. It has since spread to other countries in the Americas, as well as to other nations around the world. The word rodeo comes from the Spanish word rodear, which means "to surround or encircle."

Rodeos are typically held in an arena, with participants competing in a number of events. These events include calf roping, bronc riding, and bull riding. The goal of each event is to score points by completing a specific task within a certain time limit.

The most common type of rodeo is the professional rodeo, which is governed by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). The PRCA sanctions approximately 600 rodeos each year, which are held in the United States and Canada.

Rodeos are typically divided into two main categories: roughstock and timed events. Roughstock events include bronc riding and bull riding, while timed events include calf roping and steer wrestling.

Bronc riding is a rodeo event in which cowboys attempt to stay on the back of a bucking horse for eight seconds. Bull riding is similar to bronc riding, except that instead of a horse, cowboys ride bulls.

Calf roping is a rodeo event in which cowboys must lasso a calf, then dismount from their horse and tie the calf's three legs together. Steer wrestling is a rodeo event in which cowboys attempt to bring down a running steer by grabbing its horns and flipping it over onto its back.

The origins of rodeo can be traced back to the Spanish vaqueros, or cowboys, who began migrating to the American West in the 1700s. These vaqueros brought with them their own style of cattle herding, which soon became known as the "California" or "cowboy" style.

By the mid-1800s, this style of rodeo had spread throughout the American West and had become a popular spectator sport. The first professional rodeo was held in 1869 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Today, rodeo is enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. It is a popular sport in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Mexico.
