Gulf Coast Black Rodeo is a professional rodeo organization that has been providing entertainment and excitement for fans of all ages for over 30 years. Founded in 1989, the Gulf Coast Black Rodeo (GCBR) is the only African American-owned and operated rodeo in the United States. The GCBR has become a staple in the Gulf Coast region, hosting events throughout Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida. Rodeo fans come from all around the Gulf Coast to watch some of the best riders compete in events such as bull riding, barrel racing, team roping, calf roping, steer wrestling, and more. The GCBR also hosts special events such as bullfighting and trick-riding exhibitions. Over the years, GCBR has developed rivalries with other organizations such as the National Western Stock Show & Rodeo (NWSRA) and Professional Bull Riders (PBR). The organization is currently led by head coach Robert “Rob” Johnson who took over after former head coach John “Bubba” Gray retired in 2020. Under Johnson’s direction, the GCBR continues to be one of the most successful organizations on the circuit. The current roster of riders includes some of rodeo’s top competitors such as reigning PBR World Champion Terrance Pryor who won his first world title last year; five-time NWSRA champion Donavan Smith; three-time NWSRA champion Darrin Williams; four-time NWSRA champion DeMarcus Alexander; and two-time NWSRA champion Kasey Williams. As they look ahead to the 2023 season, Gulf Coast Black Rodeo will be looking to continue its success from recent years while also building on its rich history of excellence.
