The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is the longest-running livestock show and rodeo, having begun life as the "Southwestern Exposition and Livestock Show" over a hundred years ago. A much-beloved tradition among local Texans, this year marks another exceptional showcase of talent in both animals and riders alike! For over a century, the annual event has been held in Fort Worth, Texas from mid-January to early February. With the Stock Show, a non-profit organization has been able to contribute millions of dollars in grants and scholarships over its tenure, while still managing to give hundreds of thousands annually. This funding is geared towards assisting upcoming generations who are looking ahead toward agriculture or livestock management as their chosen field. In an attempt to strengthen the local livestock industry, ranchers in the area encouraged northern meat packers to attend their show.
In 1904, the citizens of Fort Worth joined forces and pooled together a total of $50,000 to create an organization responsible for managing the event. Under Samuel Burk Burnett's guidance as the second president of the group, the yearly exhibition was rebranded to be known as the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show. From 1908 until his term ended in 1922, the event's reach and magnitude expanded exponentially. To accommodate this growth, construction for the North Side Coliseum (now Cowtown Coliseum) was completed in '08 to host said festivities. The addition of the new indoor judging arena sparked a major surge in interest in the Stock Show, and shortly after, carnivals and midway rides were added to offer more entertainment. Not only that - exhibitors from neighboring states quickly noticed this trend as well and signed up en masse to display their commercial exhibits at the event.
