About Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo

The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo (BPIR) is a living testament to the history of African Americans in the American West. Founded in 1984 by Lu Vason, the BPIR was born out of the need to give recognition to black cowboys and cowgirls who had been excluded from mainstream rodeos. Since its inception, the BPIR has become one of the longest-running Black rodeos in the United States. The BPIR is held annually at Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth, Texas. The event features traditional rodeo events such as bull riding, barrel racing, bronc riding, and team roping. In addition to these events, there are also specialty acts such as trick riding and wild horse racing. The competition is fierce with top racers from all over the country vying for cash prizes and awards. The head coach of the BPIR is Lu Vason himself. He has been coaching since its inception and continues to be an integral part of the organization's success. He works closely with his staff to ensure that each event runs smoothly and safely for all participants. He also works hard to promote diversity within the sport by recruiting riders from different backgrounds and cultures.

In addition to hosting home games at Cowtown Coliseum, the BPIR also travels around the country for various events throughout the year. This includes stops in California, Arizona, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. The organization also hosts special events such as its 35th Anniversary celebration which will take place at Cowtown Coliseum in Fort Worth TX. The BPIR has earned a reputation for being one of the most exciting rodeos around with intense rivalries between teams from different regions across America. It is also known for awarding some of the largest prize money in all of professional rodeo sports with up to $50k going out each year in cash prizes alone! This year’s 2023 season promises to be even bigger than before with two performances scheduled at Cowtown Coliseum plus additional events at various locations around Texas and beyond! So if you’re looking for an exciting way to experience traditional American culture, then make sure you don’t miss out on this year’s Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo!
