The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo (BPIR) was founded in 1984 by Lu Vason, a visionary promoter from Berkeley, California. Vason was inspired to create an all-Black rodeo after attending the Cheyenne Frontier Days in Wyoming in 1977, where he noticed a lack of Black cowboys participating. Determined to honor the legacy of Bill Pickett, the legendary Black cowboy known for originating the "bulldogging" technique, Vason established the BPIR to celebrate and promote the contributions of Black cowboys and cowgirls to the American West. Since its inception, the BPIR has grown into a beloved series, captivating audiences across the United States and reaching millions with its celebration of Black cowboy culture. The rodeo features traditional events such as bareback riding, bull riding, calf roping, and barrel racing, while also incorporating educational components that highlight the rich history of African American contributions to Western heritage. Over the years, the BPIR has become a cultural institution, preserving the legacy of Black cowboys and cowgirls for future generations. Throughout its history, the BPIR has been committed to showcasing the talents of Black rodeo athletes and fostering a sense of community among participants and spectators. The rodeo has provided a platform for numerous cowboys and cowgirls to display their skills, with many achieving recognition and awards for their performances. While the BPIR does not have a traditional "head coach," its leadership has been instrumental in guiding the organization. Following Lu Vason's passing in 2015, Valeria Howard-Cunningham assumed the role of CEO and President, becoming the only Black woman owner and promoter of a touring African American rodeo circuit in the United States. Under her leadership, the BPIR has continued to thrive, expanding its reach and impact. The rodeo has also been a platform for top performers, including cowboys like Michael Walker and cowgirls like Stephanie Haynes, who have showcased exceptional talent in events such as bull riding and barrel racing. These athletes, among others, have contributed to the BPIR's reputation as a premier showcase of Black rodeo excellence. In 2025, the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo continues its tradition of celebrating Black Western heritage with a series of events across the United States. The 2025 tour includes stops in several cities, providing opportunities for fans to experience the excitement and culture of the rodeo. The schedule features events such as the MLK-Denver Rodeo on February 15, 2025, in Denver, Colorado; a performance in Memphis, Tennessee, on May 17, 2025; the Oakland, California, event on June 14, 2025; and the Los Angeles, California, rodeo on August 16, 2025. Each event showcases a range of rodeo competitions, including bareback riding, bull riding, calf roping, and barrel racing, highlighting the skills of Black cowboys and cowgirls. Tickets for these events are available through various platforms, offering fans the opportunity to witness the thrilling performances live. As the BPIR embarks on its 41st year, it remains dedicated to honoring the legacy of Bill Pickett and promoting the rich history and contributions of Black cowboys and cowgirls in the American West.
