The Siena Saints have a long and storied history when it comes to basketball. For over 80 years, the program has produced successful Division I teams, made deep runs in the NCAA tournament, and developed some of the top players in the country. In recent years, the Siena Saints men's basketball team have become a major player in Siena college basketball, with home games at their on-campus arena drawing large crowds and interest from around the country. The Saints have had a surprisingly long run of success throughout their time as a Division I school. Their first NCAA Tournament appearance was in 1977 and since then they have earned numerous awards and honors such as multiple regular-season championships, multiple conference tournament titles, as well as individual awards honoring players and coaches on an annual basis. Additionally, they have been able to produce many NBA Draft picks over the years including Jimmy Patsos, who coached Siena from 1995-1999 before being drafted in 2001 by the San Antonio Spurs. Amongst the many top players that have played for Siena basketball are Joanie Thomas (2x All American), who played for Siena from 1977 to 1982.
And Marlon Chisholm (2x All American), who played for them from 1980 to 1984. Both were instrumental parts of their NCAA Tournament runs while also leading them to multiple regular season titles and conference tourney crowns during their respective tenures. In more recent years, Siena has had some highlight performances including back-to-back MAAC Basketball Championships in 2009 under Coach Travis Ford and 2015 under Coach Jamion Christian – both of whom went on to coach other Division 1 schools after their stay at Siena (Ford – Oklahoma State; Christian – Mount St. Mary’s). Most recently in 2017-2018, they were led by senior guard Marquis Wright who was named MAAC Player of The Year before graduating with honors with his degree that same year.
