Representing Niagara University in Lewiston, New York, the Niagara Purple Eagles basketball team proudly plays their home games under the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference banner. The dynamic players of this college basketball squad are poised to show off their talents and compete for victory against opponents from around the region. From 1973 to 1982, and again from 1988 to 1996, the team proudly played in the now-defunct Niagara Falls Convention and Civic Center. The Niagara Purple Eagles have been granted the opportunity to compete in the NCAA Basketball Tournament a total of three times, with their most recent appearance occurring in 2007. Competing in the National Invitation Tournament a total of fourteen times, they managed to make it all the way to the championship game, though unfortunately falling short against Maryland. Twice Niagara achieved a place of distinction in the AP Final Polls, namely 16th in 1954 and 17th.
The Niagara Purple Eagles' best players are forever etched in the history of college basketball. They have seen a number of players make it to professional leagues, such as Calvin Murphy and Charley Jones who were both drafted into the NBA. The team has also produced some impressive awards over its distinguished years, most notably six Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season titles and five MAAC tournament championships. In addition to these, the team also had five of its players inducted into the Niagara University Hall of Fame. In the 2022 season, they started with a bang. After defeating MIAA rival, Monmouth University on their home court in an exciting overtime thriller, they have shown that this season is going to be full of excitement for the fans. With all the talent and experience returning from last year's team, and some key transfers added to the mix, expectations are high for this team to make some noise in the MAAC and beyond.

With a strong returning core of players and some key additions, they are primed to take a run at the MAAC championship this year. The team has shown great chemistry on the court as well as off and if they can continue that trend throughout the season, then look for big things from the Purple Eagles in 2023.
