The Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers Basketball program has a storied history that dates back to the early 1950s. Since then, the team has seen its share of success, including multiple NCAA tournament appearances and even an upset of perennial powerhouse Virginia in 2018. With a rich history of thrilling home games, epic rivalries, remarkable achievements, and talented players and coaches, it’s no wonder the Retrievers have earned such a devoted fanbase. The UMBC Retrievers have long been a beloved team at the RAC Arena (Retriever Activities Center) on their campus in Baltimore County. The arena has hosted many conference championship games and even played host to NCAA tournament games every year since 2008. It is also known as one of the most electrifying atmospheres in college basketball due to its highly energetic crowd which often includes alumni who come back year after year to cheer on their favorite team.
The UMBC Retrievers have had several prominent rivals over the years including local opponents such as Towson University, St. Francis College, Loyola University Maryland, Mount St. Mary’s University, Navy, and Coppin State University just to name a few. The biggest rivalry though is undoubtedly between UMBC and Northeastern University which started in 1991 when both teams were members of the America East Conference until it split into two divisions in 2005 with Northeastern moving up to Division I. They have achieved much success over their nearly 70-year history most notably making their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008 when they defeated Albany in the America East Tournament championship game - something that no 16th seed had ever done before or since! They also advanced all the way to the Sweet 16 in 2018 where they made headlines by becoming the first 16th-seeded team ever to defeat a top-seeded opponent when they shocked Virginia 74–54!
UMBC’s current head coach is Ryan Odom who took over as head coach in 2015 after spending three seasons as an assistant under Aki Thomas. Their roster consists of talented players such as KJ Jackson (2019–20 America East Player of the Year), Rene Castro (2020 All-Conference Second Team selection), Brandon Horvath (2018–19 America East Defensive Player of the Year), Daniel Akin (2019–20 All-Conference First Team selection) and more! The team’s best player from recent memory was surely guarded Joe Sherburne who graduated from UMBC after having scored 1,354 points over his four-year career with them which ranks sixth all-time among school records for career points!
