The East Carolina Pirates Basketball team, based out of Greenville, North Carolina in the United States, has a long and storied history. Founded in 1932, the team has been an integral part of the university and community for nearly a century. The Pirates have competed in several NCAA conferences since their inception, most recently joining the American Athletic Conference (AAC) in 2014. The AAC boasts some of college basketball’s top teams and the Pirates have consistently delivered competitive performances against conference rivals such as Memphis Tigers, Houston Cougars, and SMU Mustangs. At home games held at Minges Coliseum, fans come to cheer on their beloved Pirates led by head coach Joe Dooley who joined the team in 2014. During his coaching tenure, he has developed high-caliber teams that are well-known for their defensive prowess and aggressive style of play.
He has coached some of the best players to ever hit the court for ECU including Isaac Fleming, Kentrell Barkley, and Shawn Williams who all earned AAC Player of the Year honors over consecutive seasons from 2018-2020 respectively. The team has also had numerous accomplishments such as winning Conference USA Tournament titles in 2008 & 2010 as well as AAC regular season titles twice (2017 & 2019). In 2018 they made it to NIT Semifinals before falling short to Western Kentucky Hilltoppers after a thrilling five-game series.
