Representing UNC Charlotte in NCAA Division I basketball, the UNC Charlotte 49ers Mens Basketball team keenly strives to bring glory and pride to their university. As one of the original members, Conference USA welcomed the San Francisco 49ers back in 2013. After departing in 2005 to join the Atlantic 10 Conference, Charlotte made their triumphant return to C-USA. After beginning their journey in the Sun Belt Conference, the San Francisco 49ers made a decisive shift to join Metro Conference; this ultimately combined with Great Midwest Conference to create what is now known as – and still used by -Conference USA. Throughout much of its existence, the basketball team has been brushed aside in favor of the state's four renowned Atlantic Coast Conference teams' final four. Yet, despite such adversity and struggle for recognition, the 49ers have managed to make an indelible mark on the NCAA tournament scene with 11 appearances.
On March 20th, 2018 Ron Sanchez took the reins as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers after Houston Fancher was released from his interim position. The team plays its home games at Dale F. Halton Arena, an on-campus stadium with a seating capacity of 9105 people. Sanchez has promised to bring new energy to the team, and he has worked hard in his first year as head coach. His goal is to create a winning culture in San Francisco and become a perennial playoff contender. He has already started to implement changes to the team’s offense, including adding additional personnel to improve the offensive line. The team also has one of the most talented groups of young wide receivers in the league, with Dante Pettis, Trent Taylor, and Marquise Goodwin leading the charge. Sanchez has also made a point of bringing in high-character players through free agency and the draft.
Next season, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte will be proudly represented by its 2022-23 men's basketball team. With a talented and dedicated roster of players, fans can expect some amazing performances from this year’s 49ers squad in the NCAA Division I competition. Under the guidance of Ron Sanchez, fifth-year Head Coach, and with their home games at Dale F. Halton Arena in Charlotte, North Carolina as part of Conference USA's memberships - the team is proudly ready to take on whatever challenge comes their way. This milestone season marks the team's farewell from Conference USA before they proudly transition to become part of The American Athletic Conference on July 1st, 2023.
