The Hall of Fame Classic powered by ShotTracker is an annual season-opening college basketball tournament held since 2001. The event is now held in mid-November. Twelve teams have been invited to participate; each represents a different NCAA division. The competition is split into two phases: local sites on two separate days hosted by participating teams for the initial two rounds. The four winners of each phase meet at a predetermined site for the championship game on the third day. The current champions are the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, which won its first championship in 2013.
The tournament was created in 2001 by then-NABC Executive Director Jim Haney as a way to tip off the college basketball season with a bang. The tournament has grown in popularity over the years, and now features some of the best teams from across the country.
In recent years, the Hall of Fame Classic has been dominated by teams from the Midwest. Wisconsin-Whitewater has won the last two championships, and four of the last five. Michigan State has also been a frequent participant and winner of the event, taking home the title three times.
The teams that serve as hosts for the regional rounds automatically advance to the championship rounds at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The championship rounds occur one week after the initial round of play. Teams not hosting will advance to sub-regional rounds where they will compete in three games. In 2020, the event was renamed the Hall of Fame Classic Powered by ShotTracker.
Prior to 2007, the championship rounds were always held at Municipal Auditorium with the exception of 2001 when it was hosted at Kemper Arena. The basketball tournament is organized by Blue Ridge Sports & Entertainment, Inc. on behalf of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). The 2020 event was won by the University of Kansas.
