The Gazelle Group, a marketing firm based in Princeton, New Jersey created the Holiday Face–Off in order to bring back a holiday tournament that had been previously organized by the University of Wisconsin–Madison. The idea behind the tournament was to have eight of the top college hockey teams in the country compete over a three–day period during the holiday break. The first Holiday Face–Off was held in 2013 at Madison Square Garden and featured Boston College, Cornell, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Pennsylvania State University, St. Cloud State, and Wisconsin. The second Holiday Face–Off was held in 2014 at the XL Center and featured Boston University, Colgate, Connecticut, Michigan State, Quinnipiac, Rochester Institute of Technology, St. Cloud State, and Yale. The third Holiday Face-Off was held on December 27 and 28, 2015 at the CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh and will feature Boston University, Clarkson, Colgate, Michigan, Niagara, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Penn State. This will be the first time the tournament has been held at a neutral site, as all three previous Holiday Face-Offs have been held in New York and Connecticut. The selection of Pittsburgh as the host city was announced on June 9, 2015. The Holiday Face-Off is one of several in-season college hockey tournaments. Other notable tournaments include the Ice Breaker Tournament, the Five Nations Tournament, the Great Lakes Invitational, and the Beanpot. The tournament format consists of two four-team pools that play a round-robin within their pool. The first and second place teams from each pool advance to the single elimination semifinal round. The semifinal winners advance to the championship game, while the losers play in a third-place game. All games are played at the CONSOL Energy Center, home of the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins. Since 2009, when the Showdown was discontinued, no winter tournament had been held in the region.
