The intercollegiate American football team for Washington State University, also known as the Cougars, is the Washington State Cougars football program. The school's NCAA Division I FBS football squad plays in the North Division of the Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12). The first football team was established in 1894 and was known as the Cougars. The football team plays its home games at Martin Stadium in Pullman, Washington. The Cougars finished the 2017 season with a 6-7 record and were not invited to a bowl game. In 2018, the Cougars finished the season with a 10-2 record and were invited to the Alamo Bowl where they lost to Iowa State. The Cougars have won twenty-one conference championships in three different conferences.
They are currently members of the Pac-12 Conference, which they first joined in 1959 as charter members of the Athletic Association of Western Universities (AAWU), which became the Pacific-8 Conference (Pac-8) in 1968 and then the Pac-12 in 2011. The Cougars were also charter members of the Northwest Conference (NWC) from 1902 to 1924, winning nine conference championships, and members of the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC), winning six conference championships, from 1924 to 1958. The team has had numerous players and coaches inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The Cougars have produced twenty-nine All-Americans and ninety-six first-team all-conference selections. Sixteen Cougars have been drafted into the National Football League (NFL).
