The UTSA Roadrunners football program represents the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) in the sport of American football. The Roadrunners compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the West Division of Conference USA (C-USA). The program began competing in 2011 as an independent before joining C-USA in 2013. The Roadrunners play their home games at the Alamodome, located on campus in San Antonio. In 2010, the UTSA Athletic Department announced the creation of a football program. Seamus McDonough was hired as the first head coach and led the team's inaugural season in 2011. The Roadrunners finished with a record of 4–6. In 2012, UTSA joined the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) and finished the season with a record of 3–9. Following the 2012 season, the WAC ceased to exist as a football-sponsoring conference and UTSA joined Conference USA (C-USA).
In their first season in C-USA, the Roadrunners finished with a program-best 8–4 record. The team's eight wins were the most by a first-year program in NCAA Division I FBS history. The Roadrunners have continued to find success, finishing with winning records in three of their first four seasons in C-USA. In 2016, UTSA finished with a record of 6–5 and earned their first bowl game berth in program history. The Roadrunners defeated the New Mexico Lobos in the 2016 New Mexico Bowl, becoming the first team in NCAA history to win a bowl game in their first season as an FBS member. UTSA has had six head coaches since its inaugural season in 2011. McDonough served as the program's head coach for its first two seasons before being replaced by Larry Coker. Coker, who had previously won a national championship as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes, led UTSA for four seasons before being replaced by Frank Wilson. Wilson was hired after one season as the head coach at Louisiana State University (LSU).
In his first season at UTSA, Wilson led the Roadrunners to their first bowl game and first bowl game win in program history. Wilson was then hired by the LSU Tigers after the 2016 season. Steve Campbell, who had previously been the head coach at the University of South Alabama, was hired to replace Wilson. UTSA has had two players drafted into the National Football League (NFL). Earl Edwards Jr. was selected in the seventh round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Chargers and Marcus Davenport was selected in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. The Roadrunners have had numerous players receive conference and national recognition for their performance on the field. In 2012, linebacker Blake Terry was named the WAC Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first UTSA player to receive a conference player of the year award. Linebacker Josiah Tauaefa was named the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year in 2018, becoming the second Roadrunner to receive the conference's top defensive honor.
