About UNLV Rebels Football

The UNLV Rebels football program is a college football team that represents the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). The team is currently a member of the Mountain West Conference, which is a Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conference. The Rebels have competed in four bowl games, winning two of them. UNLV's first bowl appearance came in 1977 when they played in the California Bowl. This was followed by appearances in the 1981 Las Vegas Bowl and the 1994 Las Vegas Bowl. The Rebels' most recent bowl appearance came in 2000 when they played in the Motor City Bowl. UNLV has yet to win a conference championship or make an appearance in a major bowl game.

The Rebels began play in 1968 as a Division II independent. They joined the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 1974, becoming one of four schools to leave the WAC during that year. UNLV left the WAC after the 1976 season and became an independent again. In 1978, they joined the Pacific Coast Athletic Association (PCAA), which would later become the Big West Conference. UNLV remained in the Big West until 1995, when they left to join the Mountain West Conference.

UNLV has had a number of successful seasons since becoming a Division I program. The Rebels have had six winning seasons, five of which came while they were members of the Big West Conference. UNLV's best season came in 1984 when they finished the year with a record of 9-3. The Rebels also had a winning record in 1985, finishing the season with an 8-4 mark. UNLV's most recent winning season came in 2000, when they went 7-5.

The Rebels have had some success in the postseason, winning two bowl games. In 1977, UNLV defeated Bowling Green State University in the California Bowl. The Rebels also won the 1994 Las Vegas Bowl, defeating the University of Toledo.

UNLV has had a number of players who have gone on to have successful careers in the NFL. Some of the most notable Rebels to play in the NFL include Randall Cunningham, Larry Parker, and Kevin Williams.

UNLV has had a number of head coaches who have been successful at the school. John Robinson led the Rebels to their only conference championship, winning the 1984 PCAA title. Robinson also led UNLV to their first bowl game appearance, in the 1977 California Bowl. Tony Knap was the head coach when UNLV won their first bowl game, the 1977 California Bowl. Knap also led the Rebels to their second bowl game appearance, in the 1981 Las Vegas Bowl. Jim Strong was the head coach when UNLV won their second and most recent bowl game, the 1994 Las Vegas Bowl.
