About Texas Longhorns Football

The Texas Longhorns football program is the intercollegiate team representing the University of Texas at Austin (variously Texas or UT) in the sport of American football. The Longhorns compete in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of the Big 12 Conference. The team is coached by Tom Herman and home games are played at Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. Formed in 1893, Texas has won five NCAA Division I national championships and seven conference championships. Four Longhorns have won the Heisman Trophy, all of whom were running backs: University of Texas at Austin alumni Earl Campbell (1977), Ricky Williams (1998), and Vinny Testaverde (1986). In 2012, The Longhorns became the only college football team to win 800 games in 100 seasons. As of early 2017, the Longhorns' record is 857–335–33, ranking as the seventh-winningest NCAA Division I FBS program of all time and fourth in winning percentage.

The Longhorn Football have played their home games in Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium on Joe Jamail Field since 1924. The stadium is located on the campus of The University of Texas in Austin and has the largest capacity of any Texas stadium, at 100,119. Tom Herman became the head coach in 2017. The Longhorns have rivalries with all their former Southwest Conference opponents except Houston, which left the conference for financial reasons during World War II. Oklahoma is Texas' oldest continuing rivalry, dating back to 1900, and the Red River Showdown between the two schools is one of the biggest sporting events in the nation. Texas also holds a long-standing rivalry with Arkansas, as well as a historic rivalry with Notre Dame that dates back to 1913.

Few interscholastic varsity football programs in the nation crave success as much as the Texas Longhorns. Nevertheless, hope remains eternal on the Forty Acres, just as it has every August since the arrival of the game with the oval ball in the southern regions of the United States. 2024 brings a highly anticipated move to the Southeastern Conference. However, before that, the Horns must navigate through one final season in a modified version of the Big 12, a conference that Texas hasn't claimed victory in since 2009. With the inclusion of Houston, BYU, UCF, and Cincinnati, Texas' schedule has undergone a remarkable transformation, rendering it virtually unrecognizable compared to previous seasons. In general, one could even say it has become considerably milder.
