The Southern Jaguars are an NCAA Division I college football team representing Southern University. The Jaguars play in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and compete in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The Jaguars began playing collegiate football in 1916 and played in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference before joining the SWAC in 1934. Southern is currently coached by Dawson Odums, who was appointed head coach on December 10, 2012. The Jaguars have a record of 12-8 since Coach Odums took over the program in 2012.
Southern University has produced two Heisman Trophy winners: Ernie Davis and Mike Garrett. Davis won the trophy in 1961, while Garrett won it in 1965. Southern is also the only university to produce two Super Bowl MVPs: Doug Williams (Super Bowl XXII) and Bart Starr (Super Bowl I).
The Jaguars have had three perfect seasons in their history, including a 12-0 record in 1925 and again in 1992. The other perfect season came in 1959 when the Jaguars finished 11-0.
The Southern Jaguars football team has had 32 All-Americans, including eight first-team selections. The Jaguars have also had four players inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, including Davis and Garrett.
