The Southern Methodist University Mustangs football program, commonly known as SMU, is an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision team from Dallas County, Texas that competes in the American Athletic Conference (The American). The Mustangs football team is currently coached by Sonny Dykes and plays their home games at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on the SMU campus in University Park, Texas. The Mustangs are one of the most storied programs in college football history, having won two national championships (1935 and 1982) and 15 conference championships. SMU has had three Heisman Trophy winners, Doak Walker, Eric Dickerson, and Craig James. The Mustangs have also produced Pro Football Hall of Fame inductees Wesley Wall, Dick Night Train Lane, and Mike Ditka.
SMU has had 241 All-Americans (61 consensuses), 22 members in the College Football Hall of Fame, 12 members in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and 20 members in the SMU Athletic Hall of Fame. The Mustangs have also had many successful coaches such as Hall of Famers Matty Bell, Hayden Fry, Forrest Gregg, June Jones, and Tom Landry. The team is currently coached by Sonny Dykes who was hired on December 12, 2017.
