The Rice Owls football program is the American football team that represents Rice University. The Owls compete in the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of Conference USA (C-USA). The team is currently coached by Mike Bloomgren. The Rice Owls have played their home games at Rice Stadium since 1950. Rice fielded its first football team in 1912, shortly after opening. It joined the Southwest Conference as a charter member three years later. For close to 50 years, Rice was a top performer on both the regional and national level. However, by the early 1960s, fielding competitive sports teams became increasingly difficult for Rice.
After most of the SWC's history, it was one of just four private institutions in the conference, and by far the smallest in terms of undergraduate enrolment. However, by the end of longtime coach Jess Neely's time at Rice, the school was competing against universities that were ten times its size. Oftentimes, there would be more freshmen than total undergraduates enrolled at those schools. From 1964 to 1991, Rice only had one overall winning season and never finished higher than third in SWC play. The Owls have had 17 head coaches since their first recorded football game against Southwestern University in 1912. The program has 1 consensus Division I-A national championship, 3 SWC championships, and 4 conference championships. It has produced 2 Pro Football Hall of Famers, 2 All-Americans, and 17 All-Conference USA players.
