The Oregon Ducks football program is an NCAA Division I college football team for the University of Oregon in the US state of Oregon. The team competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the NCAA and is a member of the Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12). Until the mid-1960s, the team was commonly known as the Webfoots. In 1894, Columbia College became University Park's first school to play organized football. The University of Oregon's first football game was a 46-0 victory over Albany College in Albany, Oregon on 22 March 1894. In 1900, the Webfoots were independent Pacific Coast Conference (PCC) co-champions, going undefeated. California and Stanford were the teams that beat them.
In 1908, Oregon joined the Northwest Conference of the Pacific Coast Conference (PCC), which it would leave in 1918. After a 2–6 record in 1912, Oregon Football bounced back in 1913 and posted an undefeated season. In 1916, Oregon had just one bowl game on its resume; nevertheless, by 1928, they had won eight bowls. After a 3–1 season in 1933, Michigan improved to 9–0 in 1934 by shutting out Indiana 24-0 and edging Ohio State 7–6. The Wolverines won their last seven games, including three victories over top-five teams: 14–0 against Pennsylvania as the PCC's third-place finisher; 7–6 versus Northwestern, who was dubbed "Rose Bowl Champions" because they had finished second in the Big Ten Conference; and finally, a 38-35 comeback victory against heavily favored Penn State.
Oregon State coach Jonathan Smith is carefully evaluating the prospect of continuing the football rivalry series with Oregon, weighing the need for more information to make an informed decision. The coach at OSU, in his sixth year, reiterated the statement made by athletic director Scott Barnes last week. It was announced that the Ducks have accepted an invitation to join the Big Ten Conference starting in 2024. "We're still in the process of determining the future direction. Once we have a clearer picture, we'll be able to make informed decisions," Smith commented following Tuesday's practice session.
