The FIU Panthers football program represents Florida International University in American football. The Panthers compete against other Football Bowl Subdivision teams of the National Collegiate Athletic Association in Conference USA's East Division. With head coach Mike MacIntyre, the team has produced a Sun Belt Conference co-championship team in 2010 and 3 postseason bowl appearances. Home games are played at Riccardo Silva Stadium, which has a 20,000-person capacity.
The Panthers began to play in 2002 as a member of the NCAA Division I-A (now FBS) and became members of Conference USA on July 1, 2013. In 2010, FIU joined the Sun Belt Conference after being rejected for membership in the Big East Conference. They also finished that season as co-champions of the Sun Belt with Troy. In 2013, FIU left the Sun Belt to join Conference USA.
The Panthers have made three postseason appearances, all in bowl games. They have played in the 2009 International Bowl, the 2010 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, and the 2012 St. Petersburg Bowl. The Panthers are 3–0 in their bowl game appearances with wins over Toledo, Northern Illinois, and Temple.
In 2011, the team's head coach Mario Cristobal was fired on December 5 after going 3–9 in his second season. On December 18, 2012, FIU hired Ron Turner as its new head football coach. On October 12, 2013, FIU suffered one of the worst losses in college football history, losing to Duke University by a score of 58–0.
As of the end of the 2015 regular season, the Panthers have played 103 games in their short history, winning 47 times for a .457 winning percentage. They have won 17 games at home and 30 on the road. They are 1–1 in bowl games.
