The American football program at Florida Atlantic University is known as the Florida Atlantic Owls. The Owls began playing football in 2001 as an NCAA Division I-AA independent school. In 2007, the Owls joined the Sun Belt Conference as a football-only member and became eligible for the conference championship and a bowl game. The Owls have appeared in three bowl games, winning one (the 2008 Motor City Bowl).
The Owls play their home games at FAU Stadium, which opened in 2011. The stadium is located on the university's main campus in Boca Raton. The Owls are currently coached by Lane Kiffin. FAU's football program has produced several NFL players, including offensive lineman Michael Bennett, wide receiver Cortez Hankton, and defensive end Trey Hendrickson.
The Owls switched to Division I-A and the Sun Belt Conference after spending their first four years as an NCAA Division I-AA independent. After competing as an NCAA Division I-AA independent for four seasons, FAU's sports have competed in Conference USA since 2013–14.
In just the seventh year of its football program's history, and only the third playing in Division I, Florida Atlantic set an NCAA mark by becoming one of the two youngest programs ever invited to a bowl game.
