About Delaware Blue Hens Football

The University of Delaware's Fightin' Blue Hens football team competes in the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). They are members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), playing their home games at Tubby Raymond Field at Delaware Stadium in Newark, Delaware. The Blue Hens have competed in and won six Division I-AA/FCS National Championships and were runners-up in three other national title games. They are one of only four programs to appear in all seven title games since the Division I-AA/FCS was founded in 1978.

The Blue Hens began play in 1881, fielding their first official team in 1902. Delaware claims 14 conference championships in eight different conferences, four national playoff appearances and five trips to the Division I-AA/FCS National Championship game. The Blue Hens have had nine NFL Draft selections and produced 19 All-Americans. Despite its name, the team has no official nickname.

The Blue Hens had some success in the early 20th century. They won their first conference championship in 1916 when they shared the Maryland Intercollegiate Football Association title with Johns Hopkins and Washington College. The Blue Hens didn't receive their first bid to the post-season until 1929 when they qualified for the inaugural Orange Bowl, where they lost to Bucknell 13–0. The following year, Delaware won its first Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship and again qualified for the Orange Bowl, where they defeated Louisiana State University 3–0.

In 1944, the Blue Hens went undefeated and were co-champions of the Middle Atlantic Conference. They received a bid to the 1945 Sugar Bowl, where they defeated heavily favored Alabama 28–0.

The 1960s through 1980s were mostly lean times for Delaware football. They compiled only a combined 46–108–5 record during those years and only had four winning seasons.

The Blue Hens began to enjoy some success again in the late 1980s and early 1990s. They won their first ever outright conference championship in 1989 when they defeated Villanova for the Yankee Conference title. In 1990, the Blue Hens were co-champions of the Atlantic 10 Conference and qualified for the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs for the first time in school history. They defeated Northern Iowa and Villanova to reach the semi-finals, where they lost to eventual national champion Georgia Southern 42–17.

The Blue Hens reached the I-AA playoffs four times in eight years between 1993 and 2000. They reached the semi-finals in 1997 and 1998, losing to Youngstown State and Marshall respectively.
