About Connecticut Huskies Football

The UConn Huskies football team is a college football team that represents the University of Connecticut in the sport of American football. The team competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the American Athletic Conference (AAC). The Huskies began playing football in 1896, and participated in their first bowl game in 1940.

The team has played in 1,254 games through the end of the 2019 season. In that time, it has won six national championships (1934, 1947, 1948, 1949, 1951, and 1953), 20 conference championships (including 8 in the AAC), and 5 divisional championships. The team has appeared in 43 bowl games, winning 24 of them. The team's all-time record currently stands at 912–547–27 (.625). The Huskies have the most wins and the highest winning percentage of any Connecticut-based school at any level of competition.

With the introduction of Division I-A football in 1978, UConn began a five-year transition period into that level of play. The Huskies were declared ineligible for bowl games and the NCAA Division I Football Championship for the 1978 and 1979 seasons, but became eligible again in 1980. They have been bowl eligible every year since then. The Huskies have appeared in a total of 15 bowl games, winning seven of them.

The first recorded game in UConn football history was a 56–0 rout of Wesleyan University on November 6, 1896. The team played its home games at the campus's South Campus Field and later at Memorial Stadium in Storrs, Connecticut. The Huskies joined the Yankee Conference in 1951, and won their first conference championship in 1953 under the leadership of head coach J. Orlean Christian. UConn left the Yankee Conference in 1974 to become an independent, and joined the Big East Conference in 1991. The team won its second conference championship in 1998 under head coach Randy Edsall, and its third in 2007 under head coach Randy Edsall. UConn left the Big East Conference in 2013 to become a member of the newly-created American Athletic Conference (AAC).

In 2019, the Huskies were ranked No. 23 in the AP Poll and No. 22 in the Coaches Poll. The highest ranking in either poll was No. 19 in the AP Poll, which they reached in both 2007 and 2010. The Huskies have had four Heisman Trophy candidates, including Clarence Hill in 1979, Vinny Testaverde in 1986, Donald Brown in 2008, and Andre Dixon in 2009.

The Huskies have had seven players inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame: wide receiver Gino Cappelletti (1969), offensive tackle Gordie Lockbaum (1996), quarterback Tom Coughlin (2005), defensive end Julius Adams (2007), running back Lydell Mitchell (2010), linebacker Andre Tippett (2014), and defensive end/linebacker Hugh Douglas (2017).
