The Arizona Wildcats football program represents the University of Arizona in the sport of American college football. They play their home games at the Arizona Stadium. Arizona competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the South Division of the Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12). Since beginning play 117 years ago in 1899, the program has appeared in 25 bowl games. This includes 15 appearances in major bowl games (5 Rose, 4 Fiesta, 3 Alamo, 2 Holiday, and 1 Sugar), with a record of 11–14. Arizona has also compiled a winning record against in-state rivals ASU, NAU, and UA&P. The Wildcats have appeared in the postseason a total of 33 times, which ranks seventh all-time in the NCAA. Arizona played its first game against Occidental College (now Occidental College) on October 28, 1899. The Wildcats defeated their opponents by a score of 8–0. The very first touchdown in University of Arizona football history was scored by Edward Nabor Hauser on a 46-yard touchdown run. In 1902, Frank Holbrook was hired as Arizona's first head football coach. He led the team for three years, posting a record of 10–4–1. Holbrook retired after the 1904 season and was replaced by Pop McKale, who would go on to become one of the most successful and iconic coaches in Arizona football history. Under McKale, the Wildcats compiled a record of 31–5–2. McKale stepped down after the 1916 season to focus on his duties as Arizona's athletic director. The team was then coached by Fred Enke, who posted a record of 6–3 in his one season as head coach. In 1918, Arizona joined the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Association (now the Pacific-12 Conference). The Wildcats posted a perfect 8–0 record in their first season in the conference. The following year, they compiled a 7–1 record, which was their best in the conference to that point. In 1919, James E. Kollenkark was hired as Arizona's head football coach. He led the team for three years, posting a record of 15–8. In 1922, he was replaced by Otto Graham, who would go on to have a successful career as a head coach in both college football and the National Football League. Under Graham, the Wildcats compiled a record of 19–3. Graham's tenure as a head coach came to an end after the 1926 season when he was hired by the NFL's Cleveland Browns. He was replaced by Pappy Waldorf, who would go on to have a successful career as a head coach at several different colleges. Under Waldorf, the Wildcats compiled a record of 18–3. Waldorf's tenure as a head coach came to an end after the 1933 season. He was replaced by Tex Oliver, who would only serve one season as Arizona's head coach before being replaced by Warren B. Woodson. Woodson led the Wildcats for four seasons, posting a record of 22–13. After the 1937 season, he was replaced by Darrell Mudra. Mudra only served one year as Arizona's head coach before being replaced by Dick Tomey. Tomey would go on to have a successful career as a head coach, leading Arizona to six bowl games during his tenure. Under Tomey, the Wildcats compiled a record of 95–64. Tomey's tenure as a head coach came to an end after the 2000 season. He was replaced by John Mackovic, who only served one season as Arizona's head coach before being replaced by Mike Stoops. Stoops led the Wildcats for eight seasons, posting a record of 41–50. After the 2011 season, he was replaced by Rich Rodriguez. Rodriguez led the Wildcats for six seasons, posting a record of 42–32. After the 2017 season, he was replaced by Kevin Sumlin. Sumlin is Arizona's current head coach. He has led the team for two seasons, posting a record of 9–15. The Wildcats have appeared in 25 bowl games in their history, compiling a record of 11–14. This includes 15 appearances in the Fiesta Bowl, which is the most of any team in the history of the bowl. The Wildcats have won a total of 14 conference championships in their history. This includes seven Pac-10/Pac-12 championships and seven Border Conference championships. The Wildcats have had a total of 78 players drafted into the NFL, including 14 first-round picks. The most recent Arizona player to be drafted into the NFL was Josh Rosen, who was taken 10th overall by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2018 NFL Draft. Since the start of the Jedd Fisch regime almost three years ago, the Arizona Wildcats have made it their mission to bulk up and add healthy weight to their roster. When reviewing the notable storylines surrounding his program this 2023, Arizona's head coach observed that the Wildcats, as a team, collectively gained 994 pounds. To put it in perspective, this weight gain is equivalent to that of a saltwater crocodile.” Fisch expressed his satisfaction with the growth and transformation of the team, stating, "It's truly remarkable to witness the expansion of our roster and the progress we've made." He specifically highlighted the impressive number of defensive linemen, approximately two dozen, as well as the presence of 25 players weighing over 300 pounds. This significant shift in size and composition is a testament to the positive changes that have taken place since his arrival two years ago. Football fans, rejoice!
