Representing St. John's University in Queens, NY is the magnanimous Red Storm men's basketball team! They play their home games at the Carnesecca Arena. As part of the Big East Conference, our team proudly competes in an array of sports and activities. By the conclusion of 2021–22, St. John's proudly ranked ninth with a monumental 1,904 total wins among NCAA Division I teams. With 30 NCAA Tournament appearances and two Final Four berths (1952, 1985), St. John's is primed to contend in the big dance once again under head coach Mike Anderson. In 1965, St. John's University appointed Lou Carnesecca as the head basketball coach to succeed Lapchick after his time spent at St. John's since 1958 as an assistant coach. It was certainly a formidable challenge for Lou given the legacy of excellence established by Lapchick! Chris Mullin was the most prolific scorer in St. John's Red Storm history as a result of his remarkable shooting ability during the 1980s powerhouse teams that he led.
In the thrilling world of college basketball in 1985, Lou Carnesecca led St. John's Redmen to their second consecutive Final Four appearance – an accomplishment that earned him not only the title of National Coach of the Year in both 1983 and 1985 but also a three-time recipient of Big East’s prestigious Coach Of The Year award. Under Carnesecca's guidance, St. John's achieved a record of 526–200 and won its fifth NIT title in 1989 as well as making it to the NCAA Elite Eight in 1979 and 1991, plus the Sweet Sixteen three additional times (1967, 1969 & 1983). For three years, from 1970 to 1973, Carnesecca stepped away from St. John's and instead coached in the American Basketball Association (ABA). During this time Frank Mulzoff - a former player of his - led the team with an impressive record of 56–27 as well as 3 post-season appearances. When Carnesecca resumed his role as coach, he led the team to an impressive 29 consecutive tournament appearances and promoted their inclusion in a major conference - The Big East. Four of the greatest and most influential coaches to ever grace college basketball courts, Joe Lapchick, Frank McGuire, Lou Carnesecca, and Chris Mullin are all enshrined in the Hall-of-Fame.
