The South Carolina State Bulldogs Football team has a long and storied history of success. Founded in 1892, the Bulldogs have been playing football for over a century and have become one of the most successful programs in the country. The team plays its home games at Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, located on the South Carolina State University campus. Over the years, the Bulldogs have developed several rivalries with other teams in their conference, including North Carolina A&T, Norfolk State, and Bethune-Cookman. The Bulldogs have won numerous awards throughout their history, including four MEAC championships and seven bowl game appearances. The team also boasts an impressive list of former players who went on to play professionally in the NFL or CFL, including Willie Jeffries, Donnie Shell, and Mike Singletary. Currently leading the program is head coach Buddy Pough who took over in 2002 after Willie Jeffries left for Howard University.
Pough has already made his mark on the program by leading them to multiple winning seasons throughout his tenure as head coach and earning Coach of the Year honors from both Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA). The Bulldogs are led by some of college football's top players such as quarterback Tyrece Nick who was named First Team All-MEAC last season after throwing for 2,851 yards and 24 touchdowns. Other key players include running back Isaiah Totten who was named Freshman All-American last year after rushing for 1,231 yards and 14 touchdowns; wide receiver Jequez Ezzard who had 991 receiving yards last season; linebacker Eric Jackson who led all defenders with 95 tackles; and cornerback Jairus Moll whose three interceptions last season earned him Second Team All-Conference honors. As they look ahead to the 2023 season, South Carolina State Football will be looking to continue their success from recent years while also building on their rich history of excellence.
