The Ohio Bobcats Basketball program has a rich history both on and off the court. For many years, they have been one of the top teams in the Mid-American Conference (MAC), winning numerous conference titles. The Bobcats have been playing since 1911, making them one of the oldest college basketball programs in America. Throughout its long and storied history, Ohio has been home to some great players, coaches, and rivalries. At home games in Athens, Ohio, fans come together to cheer on the 'Cats. With its passionate and loyal fan base, Ohio has developed rivalries with many other schools, such as Kent State University, Bowling Green State University, and Miami University. On the court, head coach Jeff Boals continues to lead this team with even more success than before. Under his guidance, Ohio's offense continues to be among the best in the MAC. Ohio Bobcats Basketball roster have had much success beyond college too: backcourt duo Jason Preston and Ben Vander Plas were both named All-MAC Honorable Mentions during their senior year.
guard Teyvion Kirk made it to the All-MAC Second Team this past season. Other notable alumni include Rusty Friel, who was selected by the Cincinnati Royals in the NBA draft and was later inducted into both the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame and the OSU Athletics Hall of Fame; Jim Cleamons, who went on to win five NBA championships as an assistant coach for the Lakers; and Jimmy Allen, who is currently serving as an assistant coach at UMass Amherst after coaching stints at Princeton University and Auburn University. Ohio University has celebrated numerous awards over its long tenure—including multiple division championships from 2013-2018—and continues to strive for excellence each season. With outstanding coaching from Jeff Boals combined with talented veterans like Ben Vander Plas and Jason Preston plus talented newcomers like Teyvion Kirk set for next season, there’s no doubt that the Bobcats will continue to be a top contender in MAC basketball throughout the years!
