About Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks Hockey

Representing the University of Nebraska Omaha, the Omaha Mavericks Men's Ice Hockey team is an elite NCAA Division I college ice hockey program also known as the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks and UNO Mavericks. The renowned Mavericks proudly represent the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC). Home games are held in Baxter Arena, a recently opened facility located on campus. Since the inception of the Mavericks hockey program in 1997, they have proudly qualified for four NCAA tournaments: 2006, 2011, 2015, and 2021. In 2015, the team made history as they advanced to their first-ever NCAA Frozen Four semifinal tournament. Between 1999 and 2010, the Mavericks proudly represented the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) before transitioning to join the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for an exciting new season in 2010-11. In 2013, the Mavericks officially joined forces with the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, which includes fellow charter members Colorado College, Denver University, Miami University, Minnesota Duluth, and North Dakota. Invited founding members St Cloud State and Western Michigan Universities are also part of this powerful collaboration. After the disheartening 2008–09 season, many were left wondering what was in store for the program. On April 29, 2009, UNO made a big move and appointed the former University of Nebraska linebacker Trev Alberts to become their Athletic Director. After taking over, Alberts acted quickly in revamping the hockey program.

Kemp only had one year left on his contract as coach and saw a slim chance of being extended following their unsuccessful attempt to build upon the success of their 2006 NCAA Tournament team. Refusing to part ways with their beloved coach, Alberts implemented Kemp as the Associate Athletic Director and gave him complete control of the hockey program. In a bold move, Alberts quickly made waves by bringing in the highly-renowned Dean Blais as head coach - formerly of North Dakota. Upon Blais' arrival, many quickly speculated that UNO would join the WCHA. After College Hockey America's men’s side disbanded following the 2009–10 season, Bemidji State submitted a proposal to become part of the WCHA as its 11th member. The WCHA made it evident that they were only interested in the growth of their conference through even-numbered expansion; consequently, rumors began to spread about how strongly UNO was desired by them. Just ten days after Blais's hiring, the question of UNO's (and Bemidji State's) inclusion in the WCHA was officially answered: On June 23rd, it was announced that both universities would be joining for the 2010-2011 season. In their final season in the CCHA, the Mavericks achieved a tremendous milestone by clinching 20 wins - only the third time such achievement has been made in school history. Despite this incredible feat, they concluded with an overall record of 20-16-6 and were still situated at midtable come the end of the conference. After a difficult start to the season, Blais and his team persevered in their inaugural year together. They put forth an impressive effort down the stretch of fourteen games, finishing 10–3–1 before being stopped by Ferris State during CCHA playoffs. On March 25, 2011, the UNO Mavericks basketball team competed in the NCAA Tournament versus Michigan.

The 2010-11 season marked their first as a full-time member of the WCHA conference. The Mavericks kicked off their season in spectacular fashion, pulling off a stunning two-game sweep on Minnesota's home turf at Mariucci Arena for the first time. UNO kept up their impressive performance in the early days of November, taking seven victories in just eight competitions. This achievement earned UNO recognition from two major polls; they were ranked number six and number seven respectively - their best ranking since 2001! The Mavericks had a splendid regular season, ranking 3rd in the WCHA with an impressive 17-9-2 record. With their newly acquired momentum from their accomplishments during the regular season, they made it to the playoffs for their first-ever appearance and were unfortunately swept by Bemidji State who was seeded 10th. Despite their setback, the Mavericks clinched a spot in the 2011 NCAA Tournament and were placed 14th on the National Pairwise rankings. UNO received a 3rd seed in the West Regional, located in St. Louis, Missouri, and played 2nd seeded Michigan in the first round. Though UNO led 2-0 after the first period of play, the Wolverines battled back in the second to even up the score. With both teams unable to capitalize on their chances throughout a defensive third period, overtime was necessary for a winner to be determined. The Mavericks' season sadly concluded with an overtime shot off a faceoff and rebound goal by Wolverine sophomore, Kevin Lynch, which was followed by a ten-minute review to validate the tally. Game venues: Ralph Engelstad Arena, Baxter Arena, Grand Forks.
