The Music City Bowl, a prestigious NCAA-certified post-season college football bowl game renowned for its exciting matchups, has been held in the vibrant city of Nashville since 1998. In 2020, the TransPerfect Music City Bowl received its official namesake sponsor in TransPerfect. Previous title sponsors ranged from American General Life & Accident (1998) to Franklin American Mortgage Company and Gaylord Entertainment, who co-sponsored for 6 years between 2004 - 2009. HomePoint.com (1999), then Bridgestone took over in 2002 until 2003 before being replaced by the mentioned duo of Gaylord Entertainment and Bridgestone as joint supporters till 2009 when Franklin American Mortgage Company held the baton up until 2019. From 2014 to 2019, the bowl hosted teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Big Ten Conference and Southeastern Conference (SEC). For 2020 through 2025 however, it will only accept representatives of the Big Ten and SEC.
The first edition of the game pitted two powerful conferences against each other: The Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the Big East. In 2002, the Big Ten Conference superseded the Big East. In 2006, the Big Ten was supplanted by the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). In 2005, the ACC participated in a game when Virginia was selected to compete since the SEC did not have enough teams with bowl eligibility. Starting in 2014, the Music City Bowl and Gator Bowl (TaxSlayer Bowl for several plays) joined forces to connect an SEC team with either an ACC or Big Ten squad for six consecutive seasons. In June 2019, the Music City Bowl declared a prolonged contract with the SEC and an accord for Big Ten to supply teams from 2020 through 2025.
