The Las Vegas Bowl was founded in 1992 and has become one of the most iconic college football bowl games. It is held annually at Sam Boyd Stadium located in Las Vegas, Nevada, and features teams from the Mountain West Conference and Pac-12 Conferences. The game has also been referred to as the Fremont Cannon Trophy Game for its iconic trophy that is awarded annually to the winner. The Las Vegas Bowl has called Sam Boyd Stadium home since its inception and is famous for hosting some of the most exciting college football games each season. The bowl game has featured several high-profile performances throughout its history with some of the biggest names in college football playing at it. These include players such as Steve Young, and Jim McMahon, and more current stars like Marcus Mariota, Johnny Manziel, Clay Matthews, and Bryce Petty. The Las Vegas Bowl has also seen many outstanding achievements since it began in 1992. In 1997, the bowl game hosted its first-ever overtime game, which saw Brigham Young University defeat Kansas State.
Some of these accomplishments include a win by UNLV over Boise State in 1994; Arizona's victory over BYU in 1999; Washington State's championship win over Tulsa in 2003; Oregon's bowl win over Air Force in 2006; Utah's win over BYU in 2009; TCU's victory against Wisconsin 2010; USC’s come-from-behind win against Fresno State 2013; San Diego State’s defeat of Cincinnati 2014; San Diego State’s four consecutive victories 2017-2020; and BYU’s win over Hawaii 2020. Over the years, the Las Vegas Bowl has had a few key supporters who have made it possible for the event to be successful today. One prominent supporter is Russell Belnap who became president of what was then known as The Fremont Cannon Football Classic - later renamed to The Las Vegas Bowl - when it first began in 1992. Under his leadership and help from various sponsorships by companies such as Caesars Entertainment Group, Fremont Street Experience, Royal Purple, Orleans Hotel & Casino, and GEO Group Inc.
Today we recognize some top players who have performed exceptionally well during their time at the Las Vegas Bowl including Heisman Trophy winners Ty Detmer (1990), Matt Leinart (2004) Marcus Mariota (2014), and Baker Mayfield (2015) among other notable athletes like Alex Smith (2005), Nathan Peterman (2013), and Ka'imi Fairbairn (2016). While Las Vegas Bowl alumni have gone on to successful professional and collegiate careers, many of them have also become key figures in the community.
