The Jerry Colangelo Classic has been a staple of the college basketball circuit since 2007. It is sponsored by Phoenix Suns owner and NBA Hall of Famer, Jerry Colangelo. The Classic is an eight-team annual tournament that highlights some of the top teams in the country. The Classic first took place in December 2007 at Arizona State University's Wells Fargo Arena. Since that time it has moved to various locations throughout Arizona Wildcats, including Grand Canyon University Arena, Gila River Arena, and Talking Stick Resort Arena. Notable participants in the NCAA Basketball Tournament have included Duke, North Carolina, Texas A&M, Memphis, and Gonzaga. The Championship Game is held annually on New Year's Day each year and features two games with a third game being held on a different day for consolation purposes between the losers of the semi-finals. Over its history, outstanding players have been honored with awards such as MVP (Most Valuable Player). In 2019, the MVP was Duke’s, RJ Barrett. The Jerry Colangelo Classic is one of the premier events in college basketball and will continue to entertain fans for years to come.
