The Jackson State Tigers Football team has been a staple in the Southwestern Athletic Conference since its founding in 1877. With over 140 years of history, the Tigers have become one of the most successful programs in the conference and have won numerous awards throughout their storied history. The team plays their home games at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium located on the Jackson State University campus. Over the years, they have developed rivalries with other teams in their conference including Alcorn State, Grambling State, and Southern University. The Tigers have won several championships throughout their time in the SWAC including four Black College National Championships and seven SWAC titles. They also boast an impressive list of former players who went on to play professionally in the NFL or CFL, including Walter Payton, Lem Barney, and Robert Brazile. Currently leading the program is head coach John Hendrick who took over after Tony Hughes left for Ole Miss in 2018. In his first season as head coach, Hendricks led the Tigers to a winning record and earned Coach of the Year honors from both the SWAC and American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
The Tigers are led by some of college football's top players such as quarterback Jalon Jones who was named First Team All-SWAC last season after throwing for 2,711 yards and 23 touchdowns. Other key players include running back Jordan Johnson who was named Freshman All-American last year after rushing for 1,096 yards and nine touchdowns; wide receiver Daylen Baldwin who had 875 receiving yards last season; linebacker Keonte Hampton who led all defenders with 73 tackles; and cornerback Jayden Williams who had two interceptions last season. As they look ahead to the 2023 season, Jackson State Tigers Football will be looking to continue their success from recent years while also building on their rich history of excellence.
