About IPFW Mastodons Basketball

Representing Purdue University Fort Wayne (PFW), the spirited and driven Mastodons men's basketball team is ready to take on their opponents in this season of collegiate sports. After thirteen fruitful years with the Summit League, they joined the Horizon League in 2020. Initially, they served Indiana University – Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) prior to its closure. Despite years of hard work and dedication, the team has yet to experience success in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament. Under the guidance of Jon Coffman, the Mastodons compete in Fort Wayne, Indiana at two main venues: Hilliard Gates Sports Center (home games) and Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. The Mastodons commenced their inaugural season in 1973-74.

Having twice been honored with All-American and player of the year accolades in 1993, Sean Gibson is etched into history as an inductee to the Hall of Fame while remaining a record holder as the all-time leading rebounder. After a successful campaign in 1993, the school bagged its inaugural regular-season conference championship with an impressive overall record of 23 wins and 6 losses. Andy Piazza was given credit for their remarkable 15-3 standing in the conference as head coach. In 2013, Frank Gaines achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the Mastodons' all-time leading scorer, surpassing Gibson's record in the process. The 2001–02 season marked their inaugural year in Division I. In 2007, the Mastodons officially joined the Summit League and have been a proud member ever since. Prior to joining the NCAA Division I ranks, IPFW proudly participated in the esteemed Great Lakes Valley Conference of NCAA Division II.

In 2014, IPFW accomplished a great feat by ascending to their first Summit League tournament championship; however, they ultimately lost to North Dakota State. In 2016, the school decided to transition from IPFW to Fort Wayne in order to cultivate a deeper connection with the community of Fort Wayne. The switch only applied to the athletic department's branding endeavors; IPFW's academic brand stayed exactly as it was. On a memorable November 22nd, 2016, the Mastodons shocked and stunned Indiana by conquering them 71–68 in extra time at Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. With an impressive 11,076 people cheering them on live, it was nothing short of electrifying - as they had taken down a top-ranked Hoosiers team! Defeating Indiana, the Mastodons notched their first-ever victory against an AP Top 25-ranked team in program history.
