The Guaranteed Rate Bowl is an annual college football bowl game played in late December or early January at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois. It is one of the six major bowl games that make up the College Football Playoff system and its participants are usually from the Big Ten and Big 12 conferences. The first edition of the Guaranteed Rate Bowl was played in 2002 between Iowa and Texas Tech with the Hawkeyes winning 19-16. Over the years, several rivalries have been formed for this game including Iowa vs. Missouri, Wisconsin vs. Purdue, Kansas State vs. North Carolina State, and Nebraska vs. Northwestern. These teams meet up for exciting matchups each year as thousands of fans gather to cheer on their favorite teams competing for a trip to the prestigious National Championship Game. The Guaranteed Rate Bowl has also earned recognition from many organizations throughout its history by providing quality entertainment and awarding financial aid to student-athletes over 18 years old who compete in it.
In 2017, the bowl received a Dan Coats Award given by USA Football for Best Promotion of Safety in Youth Sports; this award recognizes organizations that are making strides toward improving safety among young athletes. The head coach of the bowl is Mike Leach, who was hired in 2020 after previously leading Washington State’s team for eight successful seasons that included three 10-win seasons and four bowl trips including one appearance in this very same bowl back when it was known as San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl (2013). Throughout its history, some of the most influential players to play at the Guaranteed Rate Bowl include former Heisman Trophy winner QB Sam Bradford (Oklahoma), DB Tyrann Mathieu (LSU), WR Juron Criner (Arizona), RB Montee Ball (Wisconsin) and running back LaMichael James (Oregon). These players have all gone on to become NFL stars with many appearances in Pro Bowls amongst them proving just how much they enjoyed playing here during their college days!
