Representing the University of Denver, The Denver Pioneers Men's Ice Hockey Team proudly competes in NCAA Division I hockey. The Pioneers proudly represent the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) as one of its esteemed members. Magness Arena in Denver, Colorado serves as the proud home of their prized sports team. Nine NCAA National Championships have been won by The Pioneers, putting them in a tie with Michigan for the most all-time: 1958, 1960, 1961, 1968, 1969, 2004, 2005, 2017, and 2022. From its foundation in 1959 to the cessation of men's college hockey contests in 2013, the Pioneers were a proud part of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA). The Pioneers have achieved an impressive feat, garnering 15 Regular Season Conference Championships (13 WCHA, 2 NCHC) and 14 Playoff titles (15 WCHA, 2 NCHC)! This remarkable record serves as a testament to their extraordinary talent.
Over the years, a total of 75 Pioneers have gone on to compete in the esteemed National Hockey League, including names like Keith Magnuson and Kevin Dineen as well as Matt Carle who won an exceptional Hobey Baker Award in 2006. Additionally, Paul Stastny and 2017's proud winner of the same award Will Butcher were among these talented players too. After a successful season, the Denver Pioneers and head coach David Carle secured a historic 18th Frozen Four appearance in 2022 with victorious wins against UMass Lowell and Minnesota Duluth. In the highly-anticipated semi-finals, Denver squared off against the University of Michigan. Carter Savoie's overtime goal sealed the Pioneers' 3-2 win, sending them to their 12th National Championship game in program history! Denver was unable to find the back of the net until late in the third period against Minnesota State during their National Championship game.
