Following the departure of Watson, the Bluejays were defeated seven times in their remaining twelve games to complete the season at 23-8 and all tied up for a third place in the Big East. After a rough patch, they managed to regroup and qualify for the Big East tournament championship game, only to be defeated by Villanova. With a No. 6 seed, they earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament and yet were defeated by Rhode Island in the opening round of play. In June 2017, Coach McDermott was offered the opportunity to fill an opening as head coach at Ohio State University. Despite this enticing offer, he thoughtfully chose to remain at Creighton instead. On March 22, 2022, McDermott was rewarded for their hard work with a long-term contract extension. Although the specific details of the deal remain confidential, this is sure to be a welcome benefit for McDermott and all involved.
