  • The Boise State Broncos men's basketball program, representing Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, has a storied history dating back to its inception in 1968. Competing initially in the Big Sky Conference, the Broncos secured their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 1976 under head coach Bus Connor. This milestone was achieved after clinching the Big Sky regular-season co-championship and winning the conference tournament. The team's home games are held at ExtraMile Arena, formerly known as the BSU Pavilion, which opened in 1982 and boasts a seating capacity of 12,644. Over the decades, the Broncos have transitioned through various conferences, including the Big West and Western Athletic Conference (WAC), before becoming a member of the Mountain West Conference (MWC) in 2011. Throughout these transitions, the team has cultivated rivalries with regional opponents such as the University of Idaho Vandals and the University of Nevada Wolf Pack, intensifying the competitive spirit of the program. Under the leadership of head coach Leon Rice, who took the helm in March 2010, the Broncos have experienced significant success. Rice, previously an assistant coach at Gonzaga University, has become the winningest coach in program history. He has guided the team to multiple postseason appearances, including NCAA Tournament berths in 2013, 2015, 2022, 2023, and 2024. The 2021–22 season was particularly noteworthy, as the Broncos secured both the Mountain West regular-season and tournament championships, setting a program record with 27 wins. Throughout its history, Boise State has been home to several standout players who have made significant contributions to the program. Notable among them is Chandler Hutchison, a guard/forward who was selected 22nd overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Chicago Bulls, marking the program's first-ever first-round NBA selection. Another prominent player is Derrick Alston Jr., who, after a stellar collegiate career, has pursued professional opportunities overseas. These players, among others, have been instrumental in elevating the national profile of Boise State basketball. During the 2025 season, the Broncos have demonstrated strong performance with an 18–8 overall record and a 10–5 mark in Mountain West play as of February 21, 2025. The team has been led by senior forwards Tyson Degenhart and O'Mar Stanley, both of whom have received all-conference honors for their outstanding play. The Broncos' schedule has featured key matchups, including a notable victory over Clemson and competitive games against conference rivals. A highlight of the upcoming season is Boise State's inaugural participation in the prestigious Maui Invitational, scheduled for November 24–26, 2025, at the Lahaina Civic Center in Hawaii. This tournament will feature a competitive field, including teams such as Arizona State, NC State, and Texas, providing the Broncos with an opportunity to showcase their talent on a national stage. As the season progresses, Boise State aims to continue its strong performance, with aspirations of securing another NCAA Tournament berth and further solidifying its status as a formidable force in college basketball.
