About Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)

A full-contact combat sport focusing on striking, grappling, and ground fighting, mixed martial arts (MMA), also known as cage fighting, no holds barred (NHB), and ultimate fighting, and originally known as Vale Tudo, incorporates tactics from numerous combat sports from across the world.

The term is most associated with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) organization, although other promoters exist. MMA has been a growing sport since the early 1990s with great success on pay-per-view, home video and DVD, cable television and network television. The UFC's first event was held in 1993 in Denver, Colorado.

Today, mixed martial arts is practiced widely in gyms and dojos across the United States and around the world. The sport has seen a tremendous amount of success in recent years, with the rise of such stars as Randy Couture, Chuck Liddell, Tito Ortiz, Ken Shamrock, Matt Hughes, Rich Franklin, B.J. Penn, Georges St-Pierre, and Anderson Silva.

The Mississippi Athletic Commission, headed by William Lyons, sanctioned IFC's Mayhem in Mississippi show on August 23, 1996, and the event was the first MMA competition subject to state regulation. It took place in Biloxi, Mississippi. The IFC was the first MMA organization to be sanctioned by a state athletic commission.

The following year, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board began to issue licenses to promoters of MMA events. In 2000, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission started sanctioning MMA fights.

MMA is currently one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It is a full contact combat sport that allows a wide variety of fighting techniques from a variety of different martial arts to be used in competition. MMA competitions have been held all over the world, including Brazil, Japan, Russia, and the United States.

The first UFC event was held in Denver, Colorado in 1993. The UFC is the largest MMA promotion in the world and has helped to popularize the sport of MMA.

MMA is a sport that is constantly evolving. New techniques and strategies are being developed all the time. The popularity of the sport has also led to the development of new weight classes, as well as new rules and regulations.
