About San Jose Earthquakes

The San Jose Earthquakes have been shaking up the soccer world since 1994 and were one of Major League Soccer's first teams. Now known as the 'Quakes, they were renamed in 1999 from their original title: The San Jose Clash. The club played its first game in 1996 and won MLS Cup in 2001, their first-ever league championship. The team struggled through the late 2000s before being reborn as the San Jose Earthquakes in 2009. Since then, they have been one of the most competitive teams in MLS, reaching the playoffs six times and winning the Supporters' Shield in 2012 and 2013. The fiercest rivalry in the soccer world, known as The California Clásico, releases its thunderous intensity when the LA Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes collide. In 2005, the Earthquakes' then-owner Anschutz Entertainment Group declared its intention to move the team out of San Jose due to their unsuccessful attempts at obtaining a soccer-specific stadium. Representing an expansion of the league, Houston welcomed the Houston Dynamo in 2006. This team continues to thrive and has become a household name among avid sports fans throughout the region. After two years of inactivity, the Earthquakes came back to play in 2008. In 2015, the Earthquakes began their home games at PayPal Park, originally named Avaya Stadium from 2015 to 2019 and then changed to Earthquakes Stadium in 2020.

For six years, the team's home turf was Buck Shaw Stadium on Santa Clara University's campus in Santa Clara, California. Major League Soccer (MLS) is the highest level of professional soccer in the United States and Canada. The league was founded in 1993 and began to play in 1996 with 10 teams. The league has expanded several times since then, and now comprises 24 teams, 23 in the United States and 1 in Canada. MLS is a single-entity structure, meaning that each team is owned and operated by the league itself. MLS has a strict salary cap, which ensures that all MLS teams are competitive and no one team can spend significantly more than any other. MLS also has a number of other rules designed to promote parity, such as the Designated Player Rule and the allocation of money. These rules have helped MLS to become one of the most competitive soccer leagues in the world. The stadium is the home of the San Jose Earthquakes and has a capacity of 18,000. Representing the city of San Jose, the Earthquakes are an elite football club competing in Major League Soccer's esteemed Western Conference. Avaya Stadium opened in 2015 and was the first Major League Soccer stadium built specifically for soccer. The stadium features a number of unique amenities, including a supporters' section with safe-standing terraces and a bar, and a partial roof that covers all seating areas.
