The Portland Timbers are an American professional soccer club based in Portland, Oregon. The Timbers compete in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member club of the league's Western Conference. The Timbers have played their home games at Providence Park since 2011. The team began to play in 1975 as a member of the now-defunct Pacific Coast Soccer League (PCSL). In 2009, the Timbers competed as a lower-division side in the USL First Division before joining MLS Soccer in 2011 as the league's 18th team. The Timbers have won several trophies including the 1977 PCSL Championship, the 2004 USL First Division Championship, and the 2015 MLS Cup. Providence Park has been home to the Timbers since their early years in the 1970s. The stadium underwent a $31 million renovation prior to the start of the 2011 season to expand capacity and improve amenities. The stadium is currently configured to seat 21,144 spectators for soccer matches.

Some of the Timbers' most notable players include Clyde Drexler, John Bain, Geoff Evans, Tony McManus, Diego Valeri, Fanendo Adi, and Darlington Nagbe. The Timbers are known for their passionate fan base, the Timbers Army. The group creates a unique atmosphere and is one of the most recognizable supporter groups in MLS.
