Minnesota United FC is an American professional soccer club based in Saint Paul, Minnesota that competes in Major League Soccer (MLS), the top level of American soccer. The club began to play in 2017 as the league's 22nd club and replaced the North American Soccer League (NASL) franchise of the same name. The club played its home games at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis during its inaugural season, before moving to Allianz Field in Saint Paul ahead of the 2019 season. In 2010, they achieved tremendous success by becoming the runners-up in MLS Cup final. In 2013, the NASL began looking for new investors to assume ownership of the then-named Minnesota Stars with the aim of keeping the team in the Twin Cities area and rebranding the team to make it more attractive to potential investors. The team's logo and name were unveiled on November 2, 2016. On January 3, 2017, Adrian Heath was named the head coach of the team. In February, the team announced that it would play its home games at TCF Bank Stadium while Allianz Field, its new soccer-specific stadium in Saint Paul, was being built. Allianz Field opened on April 13, 2019, with a match between Minnesota United and New York City FC. The stadium has a capacity of 19,400. In their first season in MLS, Minnesota United finished ninth in the Western Conference with a 12–15–7 record. On September 12, 2019, it was announced that Adrian Heath had been relieved of his duties as head coach and that assistant coach Mark Watson would serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The team finished the 2019 season in eleventh place in the Western Conference with an 11–20–3 record. In 2020, the season was suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The season resumed on August 5th with Minnesota United playing their first game since March 7th, a 2–1 loss to Austin FC. The team finished the 2020 regular season in seventh place in the Western Conference with a 10–6–8 record. In the playoffs, they defeated San Jose Earthquakes 2–1 in the Round of 16 and Colorado Rapids 3–0 in the Quarterfinals before losing to Seattle Sounders FC 2–0 in the Semifinals.
