About Columbus Crew

The team is currently being operated by Anthony Precourt and Precourt Sports Ventures, which purchased the team from Hunt Sports Group in July 2013. PSV released a statement on October 2017 stating their intention to move the team to Austin, Texas. However, a local investor group led by the Haslam family and the Edwards family (owners of the Columbus Dispatch) have purchased the club with the intent of keeping them in Columbus. The sale was approved by the league's Board of Governors on December 21, 2017. The Crew began to play in 1996 as one of the original ten Major League Soccer clubs. The team's first game was on April 13, 1996, against D.C. United at RFK Stadium, with Brian McBride scoring the club's first goal in a 2–0 win. In their twentieth season in MLS in 2015, the Crew won their first MLS Cup Eastern Conference Championship and reached the MLS Cup Final for the second time in club history. The Crew defeated the New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference Championship 5–4 on aggregate after a 4–3 home victory in the second leg, which was their first playoff series win since winning the Supporters' Shield and reaching the MLS Cup Final in 2008.

The club has won the Supporters' Shield four times – in 2004, 2008, 2009, and 2020 – and have won the Trillium Cup (a rivalry trophy contested with Toronto FC) six times. The Crew have qualified for the MLS Cup Playoffs thirteen times in their history: reaching the semi-finals three times – in 2002, 2009, and 2020. The Crew have reached the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final four times: winning their first title in 2002, and losing in 1998, 2010, and 2012. The team has also won the 2002 CONCACAF Champions' Cup (now known as the Champions League), defeating Mexican club Monarcas Morelia in the quarter-finals, Deportivo Saprissa of Costa Rica in the semi-finals, and L.D. Alajuelense of Costa Rica in the final. This was MLS's first international championship, making Columbus the first American professional soccer club to win a continental title. On June 15, 2017, the Columbus Crew announced their intention to move to Austin, Texas, for the 2019 season. The team's ownership cited a lack of progress on a new downtown stadium in Columbus as the main reason for relocating.

On August 3, 2018, MLS Commissioner Don Garber announced that MLS had no plans to expand further until 2020 at the earliest, dashing any hopes of Austin receiving an MLS team in the near future. In October 2018, the Austin City Council approved a resolution directing the city manager to negotiate a term sheet with PSV for a stadium lease at McKalla Place. On December 19, 2018, Austin City Council voted 7-4 to approve PSV's stadium deal for McKalla Place. Precourt Sports Ventures announced their intent to move the Crew to Austin, Texas, for the 2019 season on October 17, 2017. The relocation was met with protests from supporters in Columbus, who formed a group called Save The Crew. On August 15, 2018, it was reported that the Haslam family, owners of the NFL's Cleveland Browns, and the Edwards family, owners of The Columbus Dispatch, were in talks to purchase the Crew with the intention of keeping them in Columbus. The sale was approved by Major League Soccer's Board of Governors on December 21, 2017.
