About Colorado Rapids

Located in the Denver metropolitan area, Colorado Rapids are a dynamic and high-performing American professional soccer club. Major League Soccer's Western Conference proudly boasts the Colorado Rapids, who continually strive to compete and achieve greatness. Established in 1995 as part of the Anschutz Corporation, the club went on to become one of AEG's founding sports teams--the globally renowned sports and entertainment giant. As an original MLS franchise since 1996, they continue to make history with every season. The Rapids, part of the Kroenke Sports & Entertainment family, are in good company with their sister teams: the Denver Nuggets and Colorado Avalanche from NBA and NHL respectively; plus more sports teams beyond Colorado. In 1997, the first game ended in a loss for DC United against their opponent. The Rapids were just one game away from being crowned champions of the U.S. Open Cup in 1999, yet sadly lost to the Rochester Raging Rhinos in a nail-biter--the last time that a team not part of Major League Soccer achieved victory with one of their notable player Marcelo Balboa at this prestigious event. In 2007, the Rapids shifted their home games to Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, which had just opened.

Ever since then, they have been playing at that scenic stadium! In 2010, Colorado proudly earned their second MLS Cup championship title. The Rapids shifted their focus to MLS veterans in 2019, recruiting Benny Feilhaber, Kei Kamara, Diego Rubio, and Keegan Rosenberry for their roster. To bolster their roster, the team welcomed Jonathan Lewis, Matt Hundley, Sam Raben, and Andre Shinyashiki to their ranks. Just before the season began, Colorado Rapids and Sheklzen Gashi parted ways. Despite making adjustments to the roster and scoring in all but one match, the Rapids launched their 2019 campaign without a victory in 11 attempts. The Rapids opted to part ways with Hudson after a dismal start to the season, having failed to capture even one win in their first nine games. On May 1, Conor Casey was appointed as the interim head coach of the club. Under Casey's guidance, the Rapids achieved a noteworthy record of 7 victories, 7 defeats, and 4 draws. On August 25, the Rapids appointed Robin Fraser as their ninth permanent head coach. The Rocky Mountain Cup is the fiercely competitive rivalry between Colorado and Real Salt Lake that annually sets soccer fans' hearts excited even in their away games.

To prepare for the 2020 season, The Rapids made several maneuvers including obtaining Auston Trusty through a trade and successfully acquiring Lalas Abubakar permanently. To bolster their squad, the club signed at MLS Cup champion Drew Moor plus goalkeeper William Yarbrough, midfielder Nicolas Benezet, and Designated Player Younes Namli. The Rapids began 2020 with a perfect 2-0 record before the MLS was forced to pause their season due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic in March. Colorado was blessed to be allocated Group D for the MLS is Back Tournament, joining forces with Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City, and Minnesota United FC. The MLS season relaunched in August, and Colorado earned three points across four matches. On September 12, the Rapids made history by conquering Real Salt Lake 5-0 - their first win at Rio Tinto Stadium! This marked an astonishing start to a four-game streak of victories and clean sheets. Subsequently, after multiple members of the Rapids organization tested positive for COVID-19, the season was put on pause and resulting in five canceled games. Following a month-long hiatus, the Rapids hit the pitch again only to experience back-to-back defeats at Sporting Kansas City and Minnesota.

On October 31st, MLS made the momentous decision to revamp their playoff qualification system to a points-per-game approach. On November 4th, the Rapids made a triumphant return to Portland Timbers as they secured their playoff berth with a decisive 1-0 win. Just days prior, the team had handed defending MLS Cup champion Seattle Sounders FC an impressive 3-1 defeat. To close out the regular season, Colorado earned a triumphant 2–1 victory against Houston Dynamo on Nov. 8. Unfortunately, their postseason run came to an abrupt end after they were defeated 3–0 by Minnesota in the opening round of Audi 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs. The season was marked by exceptional performances from Rapids Homegrown defender Sam Vines and midfielder Cole Bassett. Vines and Bassett were immensely influential during the regular season, with Vines playing every single minute of each match. Furthermore, Bassett was at the forefront offensively by scoring five goals and assisting in an additional five. Their exceptional effort wasn't forgotten either - both were honored for a second consecutive year on MLS 22 Under 22 list!

In 2024, the Colorado Rapids experienced a transformative year, marked by both triumphs and challenges. The team displayed an impressive blend of skill, determination, and strategic gameplay throughout the Major League Soccer (MLS) season. Under the leadership of their head coach, the Rapids showcased a dynamic roster that seamlessly integrated experienced players with emerging talents. The highlight of the season was undoubtedly their deep run in the MLS Cup playoffs, where they demonstrated resilience and teamwork, earning respect from fans and rivals alike. However, the year also posed challenges, including injuries to key players and intense competition within the league. The Rapids, known for their passionate fan base, continued to enjoy strong support at their home games at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, creating an electric atmosphere. Off the field, the organization engaged in community initiatives, fostering a sense of unity beyond the game. The 2024 season for the Colorado Rapids was a rollercoaster of emotions, ultimately leaving an indelible mark on the team's legacy and setting the stage for future successes.
