The Salem Red Sox is a Minor League Baseball affiliate of the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball, who play in Salem, an independent city adjacent to Roanoke, Virginia. The team competes in the Single-A Carolina League. Haley Toyota Field at Salem Memorial Ballpark, a 6,300-seat facility that opened in 1995, is home to the team. From 1955 to 1957, the club was known as the Asheville Tourists and played in the Class D Appalachian League. The team then relocated to Johnson City, Tennessee, and got promoted to the Double-A Southern League in 1962. Since 1993, they have been members of the Carolina League. The Salem Avalanche won the Carolina League championship in 2001 and again in 2014. The Salem Avalanche was the baseball team's name from 1995 to 2009, when it became affiliated with the Colorado Rockies (1995-2002) and Houston Astros (2003-2008). The team had several other names and affiliations before 1995.
In 2009, the team announced it would be known as the Salem Red Sox, in keeping with the tradition of minor league baseball teams named after their major league affiliate. The name change became official on November 12, 2009. The Red Sox have won the Carolina League championship five times: in 2001 and 2014 as the Salem Avalanche, and in 2013, 2016, and 2017 as the Salem Red Sox. The team has had many notable alumni, including Andruw Jones, Nomar Garciaparra, Dustin Pedroia, Hanley Ramirez, Xander Bogaerts, Mookie Betts, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Andrew Benintendi. The Salem Red Sox is owned by Fenway Sports Group, the same company that owns the Boston Red Sox. The team is currently managed by Luis Rodriguez and the hitting coach is Nelson Teodoro. The pitching coach is Walter Miranda.
