The Lynchburg Hillcats are a Minor League Baseball team in Virginia's Carolina League that is the Single-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians. The team is based in Lynchburg, Virginia. The Hillcats play their home games at Calvin Falwell Field in the city of Lynchburg. The Hillcats franchise began as the Gastonia, North Carolina Rangers in 1963. The team was known as the Gastonia Rangers until 1973 when they became the Gastonia Astros. In 1976, the team became the Lynchburg Astros. The team was known as the Lynchburg Rangers from 2006 to 2009. The franchise has been in existence for 57 years and has won five Carolina League championships, in 1967, 1968, 1970, 1971, and 1987. The Hillcats began to play in 2010 as the Single-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves. The team has been the Single-A affiliate of the Cleveland Guardians since 2021. After the season, the franchise announced in May 2016 that it will rebrand. When given the choice between "Derechos," "Doves," "Lamb Chops," "Love Apples," and "River Runners" for a new nickname, the majority of fans chose to keep the Hillcats moniker. For the 2017 campaign, they did however introduce fresh logos and a new color scheme made up of seven hills green, Blue Ridge blue, and midnight blue.
