The Fayetteville Woodpeckers are a Minor League Baseball team and the Single-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. Founded in 2019, the Woodpeckers play their home games at Segra Stadium in downtown Fayetteville, North Carolina. The team has quickly become a fan favorite in the area thanks to their exciting style of play and their commitment to community involvement. Over the years, the Woodpeckers have developed several rivalries with other teams in their league, including Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Winston-Salem Dash, and Down East Wood Ducks. The Woodpeckers have won numerous awards throughout their short history, including two Carolina League championships and an appearance in the 2019 MiLB National Championship game. The team also boasts an impressive list of former players who went on to play professionally in Major League Baseball (MLB), such as outfielder Kyle Tucker and pitcher Framber Valdez. Currently leading the program is head coach Justin Jirschele who took over in 2020 after Dusty Wathan left for the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
Jirschele has already made his mark on the program by leading them to a winning record in his first season as head coach and earning Manager of the Year honors from both Carolina League and Minor League Baseball (MiLB). The Woodpeckers are led by some of baseball's top players such as infielder Taylor Jones who was named First Team All-Carolina League last season after hitting .295 with 21 home runs; outfielder Corey Julks who had a .299 batting average last season; catcher Scott Manea who led all hitters with 29 doubles; and pitcher Tyler Ivey who had 11 wins last season. As they look ahead to the 2024 season, Fayetteville Woodpeckers will be looking to continue their success from recent years while also building on their young history of excellence. With a talented roster full of experienced veterans and promising newcomers alike, there is no doubt that this team will be competitive once again this year as they strive to bring another championship back to Fayetteville.
