The Columbia Fireflies are a Minor League Baseball team that plays in the South Atlantic League. The Fireflies Minor League Baseball is based in Columbia, South Carolina, and their home games are played at Spirit Communications Park. The Fireflies were founded in 2016 as the successor to the Savannah Sand Gnats, who relocated to Columbia after 57 seasons in Savannah, Georgia. The Columbia Fireflies Baseball team is affiliated with the New York Mets and won their first-ever game against the Augusta GreenJackets on April 7, 2016. Some of the team's notable rivalries include the Charleston RiverDogs and the Lexington Legends. The RiverDogs are the Fireflies baseball game's biggest rivals and the two teams compete annually for the Silver Slugger Trophy. The Fireflies have also developed a rivalry with the Asheville Tourists, another Minor League Baseball team in North Carolina. In their inaugural season, the Fireflies reached the playoffs but were ultimately defeated by the Hickory Crawdads in the semifinals. In 2017, the team won their first-ever division title and went on to defeat the Augusta GreenJackets in the playoffs to win their first-ever South Atlantic League championship. Some of the team's top players include Tim Tebow, Andres Gimenez, Peter Alonso, and Justin Dunn.
