Club de Fútbol América S.A. de C.V., commonly known as Club América or simply América, is a professional football club based in Mexico City. Nicknamed Las Águilas, it competes in Liga MX, the top tier of Mexican football. The club was founded in 1916, and since 1959 has been owned by media company Grupo Televisa. The team's official kit colors are coquelicot and white, and the home stadium is Estadio Azteca.
América was the runner up of the inaugural North American Soccer League tournament. In 2016, the club became the first Mexican team to win the CONCACAF Champions League twice, and qualified for the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup, where they reached the semi-finals.
América has a long-standing rivalry with Guadalajara, as both clubs are the most successful clubs in Liga MX, with a combined total of 33 league titles. The two clubs also share the record for the most Campeón de Campeones (Champion of Champions) titles, with seven each.
The most recent of these was América's victory in the 2014 edition.
The club has a television partnership with Televisa Deportes, and plays its home games at the Azteca Stadium, the largest stadium in Mexico and Latin America, and the third largest association football stadium in the world. Club América has a membership program called the "América Initiative", which aims to unite all América fans around the world.
Club América was founded on 12 October 1916, in Mexico City, by a group of young football enthusiasts. The first president of Club América was Rafael Garza Gutiérrez. The team's home kit colors are coquelicot and white, and the away kit colors are green and white.
The team's first match was played against Asturias F.C., with América winning 3–2. In 1917, the team won its first championship, the Copa Mayor de México. In 1918, the team won its second championship, the Copa de Oro.
In 1919, the team moved to the Estadio Azteca, which has been its home stadium ever since. In 1928, Club América won its third championship, the Campeón de Campeones. In 1929, the team won its fourth championship, the Copa México.
In 1930, the team won its fifth championship, the Copa Mayor de México. In 1931, the team won its sixth championship, the Copa del Nordeste. In 1932, the team won its seventh championship, the Campeón de Campeones.
In 1933, the team won its eighth championship, the Copa México. In 1934, the team won its ninth championship, the Copa Mayor de México. In 1935, the team won its tenth championship, the Campeón de Campeones.
In 1936, the team won its eleventh championship, the Copa del Nordeste. In 1937, the team won its twelfth championship, the Campeón de Campeones. In 1938, the team won its thirteenth championship, the Copa México.
