Syracuse Spark lacrosse has an impressive history of success and excellence. The team was founded in 1938, making it one of the oldest collegiate lacrosse teams in the country. It has been based out of Syracuse University in upstate New York since its inception, giving the team an edge over other clubs as it can draw from a deep pool of talent. Throughout its 82-year history, Syracuse Spark lacrosse has been successful both on and off the field with numerous honors and championships to its name. On the field, Syracuse has taken home five NCAA National Championships over the decades, including consecutive titles between 1988 and 1990 under coach Roy Simmons Jr., who was inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1996 for his contributions to lacrosse. The team's biggest rivalry is with nearby Johns Hopkins University which will often travel to upstate New York for annual matches between these two great sides.
The Sparks have also won 15 Ivy League Championships over their long history as well as dozens of individual awards handed out each year such as Most Valuable Players (MVPs), All-Americans, Coaches Awards, etc. The current head coach at Syracuse is John Desko who took over the reigns of the side back in 1999 after several successful seasons as an assistant coach under Simmons Jr., though former assistant Kevin Donahue will take over starting this upcoming season (2021).In addition to Coach Desko's leadership, some of the top players currently wearing orange include defender Brennan O’Neill (three-time All-American), midfielder Nate Solomon (two-time All-American), attackman Brendan Bomberry (2019 Major League Lacrosse MVP) and goalie Drake Porter (2020 USILA Player of Year).
