The Youngstown Phantoms are a premier junior ice hockey team that competes in the Eastern Conference of the United States Hockey League (USHL). Representing Tier I status, these talented players proudly compete against teams from various states and leagues to demonstrate their skill on the ice. Zoldan, the founder and CEO of renowned fireworks brand Phantom Fireworks, united forces with Troy Loney - a 12-year NHL veteran best known for his time with the Pittsburgh Penguins where he was joined by his wife Aafke in establishing the team which would be aptly named after their combined endeavors. Taking advantage of a great opportunity in the summer of 2018, the Loney's sold their interests to CEO Murry Gunty and Black Bear Sports Group. Seventeen former Youngstown Phantoms players have been chosen to take part in the NHL draft, with defenseman Scott Mayfield being selected as the 34th overall pick in 2011 by New York Islanders.
The Carolina Hurricanes were so impressed by Goalie Matthew Mahalak's performance in the 2009-10 season that they chose him as their 163rd overall pick, 6th round selection in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. The Washington Capitals selected forward Nathan Walker in the 3rd round (89th overall pick) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, following his impressive 2012–13 season. In 2014, Maxim Letunov (2013–15) was drafted in the second round at 52nd overall by the St. Louis Blues during the NHL Entry Draft. Moreover, a remarkable seven alumni have gone on to sign NHL contracts: Nathan Walker, Scott Mayfield, Brandon Saad, Jiri Sekac, Andrej Sustr, and Lucas Craggs. To top it all off, Mayfield, Saad, Sustr, and Sekac have managed to break into the big leagues with their respective teams. Remarkably, in 2013 Saad was part of the victorious Blackhawks team who won the Stanley Cup. On August 10, 2011, the Youngstown Phantoms introduced 29-year-old Anthony Noreen from Chicago as their next head coach.
This was a momentous occasion in team history - making him only the third ever to hold that position. Before joining the esteemed Youngstown Phantoms, Noreen had served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin - Steven's Point for three successful seasons. Noreen's contract was renewed in April 2012, ensuring her tenure until the 2013-14 season. After the 2014-15 season, Noreen was welcomed to the ECHL's Orlando Solar Bears team with open arms. Following a thorough search, John Wroblewski was eventually chosen to lead the team as its fourth head coach for the 2015-16 season. After making a positive impact in Youngstown, Wroblewski was given the opportunity to lead the USA Hockey National Team Development Program as its head coach, with former assistant coach Brad Patterson taking his place. The league is split into two divisions, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference. Each of these conferences offers a range of competitive teams that battle for supremacy in their respective regions.
